About the work
About the work
It all started with a few line drawings of some funny-looking people, indulging their sexual fantasies. Then came a little colour in the form of ink & watercolour washes. These culminated in his first exhibition at Things Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. A few did sell, enough to invest in oils and a stretch canvas. The first attempts were of a lot of fat people playing musical instruments – these sold mainly to family and friends.
Two years later, after attending drawing classes at the Witwatersrand University - another exhibition at the Melville Place Gallery, this time an entirely different look.
“My style is ever-evolving: I can’t seem to satisfy my vision of beauty. I’m totally absorbed when I paint. I allow myself to be in charge of the entire production. To see it as an ideal”.
More exhibitions…more critics…more cheese and wine…more time to paint.
“To me it’s the ability to manipulate paint into the desired effect or do I mean ‘affect’? I draw my subject matter from the classical formula where composition is based on creating levels of depth. A point at which to enter the painting…visually explore the different levels and then finally come to rest on the focal point.”
Although his subject still remains the figurative, his ever-changing impressions and practised ability have allowed his works to mature slowly over the past 21 years, each phase clearly defined, each painting carefully catalogued.
Today Grant lives and paints from his home in Hout Bay, Cape Town, and invites all art lovers to come and see a work in progress. Just phone (021) 790-6904 for an appointment.
